You think to yourself that, sure, capitalism is the most efficient way to do things, but is the pursuit of efficiency really the thing we must be doing? Or is it maybe the other way around, and in seeking endless improvement we dehumanize ourselves and others? Maybe the right way to treat the anxiety we all feel isn't by tackling the anxiety itself, but its cause: capitalism. And now you have a handful of spores that can fix this. As they spread through the world, you create a conscious mind of a size the planet has never experienced, and with it, you create a new economy - one based on mycelium networks which send resources to where they're needed, not to those who are most powerful. Sure, your new mushroom-y economic system is not quite as efficient as capitalism was, but it turns out, once you distribute the goods more equitably, everyone can still have enough without the endless pursuit of growth. As a bonus, we pull ourselves back from the brink of ecological collapse, and everything has a nice earth-y umami-y sort of smell to boot.
